When I can easily see the pattern through the fabric, I like to tape the pattern to a firm, smooth surface like my cutting mat. This is one of those "self-healing" mats that you can cut right on. I love it!
Then I put my fabric over the pattern and tape the fabric in place too. Now I can use my water soluble marking pen:
I usually keep a copy of the pattern I am transferring so I can refer to it while tracing:
Now I have the pattern ready to go! This is my big 10" embroidery hoop. I really like the way it holds the fabric so snug:
My next step is going to be color choices! So far, I love these:

Kim, what a darling project! Have you ever used a Sulky transfer pen? I tried one today for the first time -- you print your design, mark over it with the Sulky pen, and then iron transfer the design onto your fabric. It was nice and very, very easy! Looking forward to seeing your finish on this one! :)

I have a question- do you prewash all the fabrics you embroider on? I assume you have to wet them afterwards to get the pen marks off- I am afraid of shrinking the fabric. Anyone who has advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi Johanna - It depends on what I am doing with the fabric, If I am making something I am going to frame or for a pillow, I usually don't prewash. If I am making a tea towel or something I am expecting to wash in the future, I prewash the fabric. And yes, I have to rinse the marking pen lines away - rinse really well because they can on occasion reappear if you don't rinse well enough!

Monika - Thanks! Yes that is a new needle book :) My mom made it for me for my birthday. I love the size of this one, there is even a pouch for my scissors! I cut the pattern out of the pattern packet and I always like to trim around the pattern or motif I am transferring so that I can move it around and actually see the size on the fabric.

Hi Muiji - The pen I am using in this post is the DMC Embroidery Transfer Pen. It is water soluble

Can the marks from the transfer paper be removed?
Hi Muiji :) The marks from the graphite transfer paper are permanent and cannot be removed.
The marks from the wax free tracing paper can be removed.
