Categorized as a filling stitch, the Torocko Stitch is made up of three sets of Straight Stitches. I used three different colors of perle cotton thread. I also drew a helpful square grid to keep everything evenly spaced. Notice the blue dots, that is where my vertical and horizontal lines will start and stop:
The first step is to come up through the fabric at the top of the area to be filled:
Make a long vertical Straight Stitch by going down into the fabric at the bottom of the area to be filled:
Repeat those vertical stitches, evenly spaced as many times as needed to fill the space.
Now for the horizontal stitches. Come up through the fabric on the right side of the area to be filled:
Make long horizontal Straight Stitches across the space:
The next step is to make upright crosses over the horizontal Straight Stitches:
Form these crosses using Straight Stitches:
Forming a cross at alternating rows and columns:
The final step is to make a small diagonal Straight Stitch at the center of each cross:
This stitch is from the book Embroidery Stitches by Mary Webb.
Hi Kim,
ReplyDeleteThis looks very interesting. Thank you for throwing light on this embroidery stitch. I did not know about this.

Hi Kim!
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting stitch. The colors you used make it easy to follow along.
I have been unable to follow you for a while now. I can't get onto Bloglovin at all. I figured out a way to find your blog and am now able to see you again! Now I need to get caught up on all you have been doin.
Take care,
Darlene
hi Mallika - You are welcome! I had never heard of this stitch either. According to the book Embroidery Stitches by Mary Webb this is also known as "Cross couched filling stitch" and "Hungarian cross stitch".
ReplyDeleteHi Darlene - Thanks! Hmmm...I am sorry to hear about being unable to follow - thank you for the heads up - I will look into it!
ReplyDeleteI don't think the problem is on your blog, Kim. I can't get onto Bloglovin at all. I have tried several ways and simply get a page that says the link is broken and the page won't load. I tried to contact Bloglovin and it won't let me do that either.
ReplyDeleteHi Kim,
ReplyDeleteJust a quick note to tell you that I am now able to get onto Bloglovin and follow you there again. Must have been a glitch on their end. Now I have two ways to follow you so I won't miss a thing. Take care.
Darlene
