Time for another 100 Stitches Plus post. This simple decorative stitch is known as the Tulip Stitch.
For my demonstration, I am using perle cotton floss. This is DMC color variations number 4200.
This stitch is made up of a Lazy Daisy Stitch and three Straight Stitches.
The first step is form the Lazy Daisy Stitch:
To finish off the Lazy Daisy stitch, go back into the fabric a little a little further away from the loop than you normally would. This makes a "tail". This will give you room to fit the three Straight Stitches within the tail:
Now form the three Straight Stitches
Notice the needle to form the Straight Stitch is sliding under the tail:
and then going back into the fabric:
Make the three Straight Stitches of different lengths to provide an interesting base for the tulip.
When the last Straight Stitch is finished, secure the floss on the underside:
Simple! I found this stitch in Embroidery Stitches by Mary Webb. She notes that this stitch may be worked alone, in a line as for a border or randomly to fill a shape.
