Hi Heather! It sounds like you are off to a great start. Embroidering is so much fun, I know you are going to enjoy it. For material, you can do basic stitches on just about any fabric. I would suggest a nice medium weave 100% cotton to practice your stitches on. Linen is a wonderful fabric for embroidering but can be fairly expensive. The only fabrics I avoid are thick pile fabrics (like velvet or terry-cloth)or stretchy knit fabric (like sweat shirts). I avoid these mainly because it is difficult to transfer images onto these types of fabrics.
